M. Grace Hunter, 94, of Piety Hill, died on August 26, 2013 at Illinois Valley Community Hospital following an extended illness.

Private services were held on Saturday, Aug 31 at the Prey-Mueller Funeral Home in Oglesby with the Rev. Marc Strand officiating. Burial was in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in La Salle.

Grace was born July 27, 1919 in Piety Hill to George and Cora Martyn Hunter.

She was a graduate of the John Hopkins School of Nursing, acquired a Bachelor of Science degree from Lake Forest College and a Master of Science Degree from the University of Chicago. She served as a nurse at Illinois Psychiatric Hospital and Downey Veterans Hospital in Chicago. She concluded her nursing career by serving as a school nurse in the Chicago Public School System for over 30 years.

Grace always considered Piety Hill as her home and was instrumental in acquiring a State of Illinois grant that was used to install new water lines throughout Jonesville and Piety Hill. She accepted a position as a director of the Jonesville-Piety Hill Water District and held that position until her demise. She served as a member of the Tri County Opportunities Council for the past 25 years. She was a director on the La Salle County Housing Board for over 12 years, was a member of the Herb Guild, the La Salle County Genealogy Guild, the La Salle County Home Extension and the La Salle County Republican Women’s Club, as well as a lifetime member of
the St. Andrews Society of Illinois. She was an avid supporter of the Oglesby Library where she contributed to the edification and upgrading of the new library. Grace was a staunch professional baseball fan whose support for the Cincinnati Reds was only overcome by her quest to witness Pete Rose’s induction into the Hall of Fame.

Survivors are many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death her parents and ten brothers and sisters.
